Elastomer
Bir elastomer viskoelastisiteli ve çok zayıf moleküller arası kuvveti olan, genelde düşük Young modülüne ve diğer materyallere kıyasla yüksek kopma gerginliğine sahip olan bir polimerdir. Esnek polimerden türetilen terim, vulkanizatlara atıf yapılırken tercih edilmesine rağmen sıklıkla kauçuk terimi ile birbirlerinin yerine kullanılabilir. Polimer oluşturmak üzere bağlanan monomerlerin her biri genellikle karbon, hidrojen, oksijen ve / veya silikondan yapılır. Elastomerler, cam geçiş sıcaklığının üzerinde bulunan amorf polimerlerdir, böylelikle önemli bölümsel hareket mümkündür. Ortam sıcaklıklarında, kauçuklar nispeten yumuşak ve deforme olabilmektedir. Bunların birincil kullanımı mühürler, yapışkanlar ve kalıplanmış esnek parçalar içindir. Farklı kauçuk türleri için uygulama alanları, lastik, ayakkabı tabanlarının yanı sıra nemlendirme ve yalıtım elemanları kadar çeşitli manifold ve kapak segmanlarıdır. Kauçukların sahip olduğu önem, küresel gelirlerin 2020 yılında 56 milyar ABD doları seviyesinde olacağı gerçeğinden hareketle değerlendirilebilir.
