Elektrofon kategorisi, elektrik içeren aletleri tanımlamak için 1940'ta Sachs tarafından Hornbostel-Sachs müzik aleti sınıflandırma sistemine eklendi. Sachs 5. kategorisini 3 alt kategoriye ayırdı: 51 = elektrikle çalıştırılan akustik enstrümanlar; 52 = elektrikle güçlendirilmiş akustik enstrümanlar; 53 = öncelikle radyoelektrik araçlar olarak adlandırdığı theremins veya synthesizer gibi, elektrikle çalışan osilatörler vasıtasıyla ses çıkaran araçlar. Francis William Galphin, Sachs-Hornbostel'den daha Mahillon'a yakın olan kendi sınıflandırma sisteminde böyle bir grup sağladı.
