Biyolojide ve özellikle genetikte, epigenetik, DNA dizilimindeki değişikliklerden kaynaklanmayan, gen aktivitesindeki kalıtsal değişikliklerin çalışmasıdır; aynı zamanda, bir hücrenin transkripsiyonel potansiyelinde, mutlak olarak kalıtsal değildir, kararlı, uzun vadeli değişiklikler üzerinde çalışmayı tanımlamak için kullanılabilir. DNA dizilimindeki değişikliklere dayanan basit genetik yöntemlerin aksine, epigenetinin gen ifadesinde veya hücresel fenotipindeki değişiklikler başka nedenlere sahiptir, bu nedenle epigenetik terimini kullanır.
