Epitel, bağ dokusu, kas dokusu ve sinir dokusu ile birlikte dört temel hayvan dokusundan biridir. Epitel dokuları vücuttaki boşlukları ve yapıların yüzeylerini hizalamakta ve aynı zamanda birçok bez oluşturmaktadır. Epitelyal hücrelerin fonksiyonları sekresyon, selektif absorpsiyon, koruma, transcellular taşıma ve sansasyon bulguları içerir. Yunanca'da ἐπί "üstünde" veya "üstte" anlamına gelir ve θηλή "meme başı" anlamına gelir. Epitel tabakalar avaskülerdir, bu nedenle altta yatan bağ dokusundan bazal membran yoluyla maddelerin difüzyonu yoluyla beslenme almalıdırlar. Epitel, ekzokrin ve endokrin bezler olarak işlev gören hücre kümeleri halinde de organize edilebilir.
