Sözlükteki ergative ilk tanım, aynı adı doğrudan nesne ya da konu olarak eşdeğer anlam taşıyan bir fiili ifade eder. Böylece, "sigorta", ergaktif bir fiildir: "Işıkları kaynaştırdı" ve "kaynaşmış ışıklar" da eşdeğer anlamları vardır.
