Espresso, ince öğütülmüş kahve çekirdekleri üzerinden basınç altında az miktarda kaynayan suyun zorlanmasıyla demlendi. Espresso genellikle diğer yöntemlerle demlenmiş kahve oranından daha kalın, asılı ve çözünmüş katıların daha yüksek bir konsantrasyona sahip olması ve üzerine krema içermesi. Basınçlı bir demleme işlemi sonucunda tipik bir espresso bardaki aroma ve kimyasallar çok yoğunlaşmıştır.
