Evrim, biyolojik popülasyonların kalıtsal özelliklerinin ardışık nesiller üzerindeki değişimi ifade eder. Evrimsel süreçler, türler, bireysel organizmalar ve DNA ve proteinler gibi moleküller de dahil olmak üzere biyolojik organizasyonun her seviyesinde çeşitliliğe neden olur. Dünyadaki tüm yaşam, yaklaşık 3.8 milyar yıl önce yaşayan son evrensel bir atadan gelmektedir. Tekrarlanan türleşme ve yaşam farklılığı, paylaşılan biyokimyasal ve morfolojik özellikler kümelerinden veya paylaşılan DNA dizilimlerinden çıkarılabilir. Bu homolog özellikler ve sekanslar, daha yakın bir ortak atayı paylaşan ve hem mevcut türlerin hem de fosil kayıtlarının kullanıldığı evrim tarihlerini yeniden oluşturmak için kullanılabilen türler arasında daha fazla benzerlik gösterir. Mevcut biyoçeşitlilik kalıpları hem türleşme hem de nesli tükenmek üzere şekillendirilmiştir. Charles Darwin, doğal seçilim yoluyla evrim teorisi için bilimsel bir argüman oluşturan ilk kişi oldu.
