Exogenous, bir sistemin dışından gelen bir eylemi veya nesneyi belirtir. Endojen olanın tersi, sistem içerisinde üretilen bir şey. ▪ Ekonomik bir modelde dışsal değişim, modelin dışından gelen ve model tarafından açıklanamayan bir değişikliktir. Örneğin, basit arz ve talep modelinde, tüketici beğenilerinde veya tercihlerde meydana gelen bir değişiklik, model tarafından açıklanmaz ve aynı zamanda, denge fiyatında değişikliklere neden olan içsel olarak talep değişikliklerine neden olur. Benzer şekilde, tüketici gelirinde bir değişiklik modelin dışında verilir. Başka bir deyişle, dışsal bir değişiklik, otonom olan, yani modelin işleyişinden etkilenmeyen bir değişkenin değiştirilmesini gerektirir. ▪ Doğrusal regresyondaki değişken, diğer tüm yanıt değerlerinden bağımsız olduğu anlamına gelir. ▪ Biyolojide, "dışsal", bir sistemin dışından gelen bir eylemi veya nesneyi belirtir.
