Ferredoxin
Ferredoksinler, bir dizi metabolik reaksiyonda elektron transferine aracılık eden demir-sülfür proteinleridir. "Ferredoxin" terimi, DuPont Co.'nun D.C. Wharton tarafından hazırlandı ve ilk olarak 1962'de Mortenson, Valentine ve Carnahan tarafından anaerobik bakteri Clostridium pasteurianum'dan saflaştırılan "demir proteine" uygulanmıştır. 1962'de Tagawa ve Arnon tarafından ıspanak kloroplastlardan izole edilen bir başka redoks proteini "kloroplast ferredoxin" olarak adlandırıldı. Kloroplast ferredoxin fotosentezin hem siklik hem de çevrim dışı fotofosforilasyon reaksiyonlarına katılır. Sikliksiz fotofosforilasyonda ferredoxin son elektron alıcıdır ve enzimi NADP + redüktazı azaltır. Güneş ışığıyla uyarılan klorofilden üretilen elektronları kabul eder ve bunları enzim ferredoxin'e aktarır: NADP + oxidoreductase EC 1.18.1.2. Ferredoksinler, demir-kükürt kümeleri halinde düzenlenmiş demir ve kükürt atomları içeren küçük proteinlerdir. Bu biyolojik "kapasitörler", elektronları kabul edebilir veya deşarj edebilir; bu etki, demir atomlarının oksidasyon durumlarındaki değişikliklerdir. Bu şekilde, ferredoxin biyolojik redoks reaksiyonlarında elektron aktarım maddesi olarak görev yapar.
