Ön Tahmin, ileri gelen bir yelkenli geminin üst güvertesidir veya gemicilerin yaşama alanlarına sahip bir geminin ön kısmıdır. İkincisi, bir gemi subayının aksine sıradan denizcilerle ilgili her şeyi simgeleyen "direkten önce" ifadesi ile ilgilidir. Ortaçağda yapılan gemi inşaasında, savaş gemisi geminin yayında genellikle uzun boylu, çok katlı, kale benzeri bir yapıya sahipti. Okçuların düşman gemilerine ateş etmeleri için bir platform, ya da geminin bindiği takdirde savunma kalesi olarak hizmet etti. Aftcastle adı verilen benzer fakat genellikle çok daha büyük bir yapı, geminin arka ucundaydı ve ana direkten kıç tarafa kadar uzanıyordu. Gemide böyle uzun boylu işler yapmak yelken performansı için zararlıydı. 16. yüzyılda donanma savaşının birincil aracı olan biniciler, tüfeklerin yerini aldığı ve tabancanın yerini aldığı günümüzde, ortaçağ rüzgârlarına artık ihtiyaç duyulmadı ve daha sonra galleon gibi gemilerin sadece bir katlı, tek katlı, yüksek dayanımlı bir öngörüsü vardı.
