Döviz kuru, bir bankanın, bir yatırımcı ile vadeli bir sözleşme yapması halinde, bir bankanın gelecekteki bir başka para cinsinden bir döviz almasını kabul ettiği döviz kurudur. Çok uluslu şirketler, bankalar ve diğer finansal kuruluşlar, hedging amaçlı vadeli döviz kurundan yararlanmak için vadeli işlem sözleşmeleri yapmaktadır. Döviz kurları, spot döviz kuru ile arbitraj imkânlarının ortadan kalktığı döviz piyasasındaki bir ekonomik dengesini yansıtan iki ülke arasındaki faiz oranlarındaki farklılıklar arasında bir eşlik ilişkisi ile belirlenir. Eşitlik hali, dengede olduğunda ve faiz oranları iki ülke arasında değişirse, eşlik koşulu, forward oranının faiz oranı farkını yansıtan bir prim veya indirimi içerdiğini ima eder. Gelecekteki spot döviz kurlarını tahmin etmek için vadeli döviz kurlarının teorik sonuçları vardır. Finansal ekonomistler, ileri oranın, ampirik kanıtların karıştığı gelecek spot oranını doğru bir şekilde öngördüğü hipotezini ortaya koymuştur.
