Gazeteci, bir harita veya atlasla birlikte kullanılan coğrafi bir sözlük veya dizindir. Genellikle coğrafi makyaj, sosyal istatistikler ve bir ülkenin, bölgenin veya kıtanın fiziksel özellikleri hakkında bilgi içerirler. Bir gazetecinin içeriği, bir öznenin konumunu, dorukların ve su yollarının boyutlarını, nüfusu, GSYİH ve okuma yazma oranını içerebilir. Bu bilgiler genel olarak alfabetik sırayla listelenen girdilere bölünür. Eski Yunanca gazetecilerin Helenistik çağlardan beri var oldukları bilinmektedir. İlk bilinen Çinli gazeteci 1. yüzyıl tarafından serbest bırakıldı ve Çin metropolü 9. yüzyılda Çin'de basılı medya çağında yerel bilgi birikimi ve yerel gurur kaynağı olarak kendi bölgelerine gazeteler üretmeye başladı. Bizans'ın coğrafyacı Stephanus, Avrupa'daki derleyicileri etkileyen 6. yüzyılda bir coğrafi sözlük yazdı. Modern gazeteciler, çoğu kütüphanenin yanı sıra internetteki referans bölümlerinde de bulunabilir. Sözcüğü bazen gazete başlıklarında kullanılmıştı, oysa uzun zamandan beri modadan düşmüştü.
