Genel pratisyen, akut ve kronik hastalıkları tedavi eden ve hastalara koruyucu bakım ve sağlık eğitimi veren bir tıp doktorudur. Genel pratisyenler, hastalarının bakımıyla ilgili biyolojik, psikolojik ve sosyal faktörleri dikkate alan bütüncül bir yaklaşım uygulamak istemektedirler. Görevleri, vücudun belirli organlarıyla sınırlı değildir ve birçok sağlık sorunu olan kişilerin tedavisinde belirli becerilere sahiptir.
