Jeolojik bir yüzey araştırması, jeolojik bir harita veya model oluşturmak amacıyla belirli bir zemin parçasının altındaki jeolojinin sistematik olarak araştırılmasıdır. Jeolojik yüzey araştırması, elle çekim ve makineye dayalı sondaj delikleri gibi müdahaleci yöntemlere, hava fotoğrafçılığı ve uydu görüntüleri gibi jeofiziksel teknikler ve uzaktan algılama yöntemlerinin kullanımına yönelik geleneksel yürüyüş incelemesinden, mostra ve yer şekillerini inceleyen teknikler kullanır. Bu anketler, eyalet, il veya ulusal jeolojik araştırma kuruluşları tarafından jeolojik envanterin muhafaza edilmesi ve yer bilimi bilgisinin ulus yararına ilerletilmesi için yapılabilir. Bir jeolojik araştırma haritası, genellikle, jeolojik birimlerin ölçülen kapsam ve sınırlarını, topografik bir haritada, noktalar ve çizgilerdeki bilgilerle birlikte üst üste bindirir.
