Jeolojik zaman ölçeği stratigrafiyi zamanla ilişkilendiren ve jeologlar, paleontologlar ve diğer dünya bilimcileri tarafından Dünya tarihinin her yerinde gerçekleşen olaylar arasındaki zamanlama ve ilişkileri tanımlamak için kullanılan bir kronolojik ölçme sistemidir. Burada sunulan jeolojik zaman aralıkları tablosu Uluslararası Stratigrafi Komisyonu tarafından belirlenen terminoloji, tarihler ve standart renk kodlarını kabul eder. Radyometrik tarihlemeye ait kanıtlar, Dünya'nın yaklaşık 4.54 milyar yaşında olduğunu göstermektedir. Dünya'nın geçmişinin jeolojisi ya da derin zamanları, her periyotta gerçekleşen olaylara göre çeşitli birimler halinde organize edilmiştir. GTS üzerindeki farklı zaman dilimleri genellikle, katmanların yokoluşu gibi önemli jeolojik veya paleontolojik olayları belirten, tabakaların bileşimindeki değişikliklerle sınırlanır. Örneğin, Kretase dönemi ile Paleogene dönemi arasındaki sınır, dinozorların ve diğer birçok yaşam grubunun çöküşünü işaretleyen Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction olayı ile tanımlanır. Güvenilir fosil kayıtlarından önce gelen daha eski zaman aralıkları mutlak yaşla tanımlanır.
