Modern Türkçede yazılı olan Giaour veya Gawur veya Ghiaour, saldırıya uğramış dini ve bazen etnik kökenlerden biri olan Müslümanlar tarafından Türkiye'de ve Balkanlarda gayri Müslüman olmayan herkesi tanımlamak için kullanıyor; özellikle Yunanlılar, Ermeniler, Bulgarlar gibi yakın Hıristiyan nüfusa atıfta bulunuyorlar , Sırplar, etnik Makedonlar, Romenler ve Asuriler. Bu terim Balkanlar'daki Hıristiyanlar tarafından oldukça saldırgan kabul edilir. 1911 Ansiklopedisi Britannica terimi şöyle tanımladı: Giaour, Türkler tarafından Müslümanlar olmayanları tanımlamak için kullanılan bir sözcüktür ve özellikle Hıristiyanlara atıf yapar. İlk terbiyesizlik ve kınama terimiyle istihdam edilen sözcük o kadar genel bir hale geldi ki, çoğu vakada kullanımı konusunda bir hakaret amaçlanmadı; Benzer şekilde, Çin'in bazı bölgelerinde, yabancı Şeytan terimi suç kapsamına girmedi. Arapça kafir veya inanmayan insanlar arasında, halkların ve ülkelerin doğru adı haline gelmek için yaygın olarak kullanılan, sıkı bir benzetme bulunmaktadır.
