Küreselleşme, dünya görüşlerinin, ürünlerinin, fikirlerinin ve kültürün diğer yönlerinin değiştirilmesinden doğan uluslararası bütünleşme sürecidir. Telgrafın yükselişi ve Internet'in vatandaşlığını da içeren ulaşım ve telekomünikasyon altyapısında gelişmeler, küreselleşmenin başlıca unsurlarıdır ve ekonomik ve kültürel faaliyetlerin birbirlerine daha fazla bağımlılığı oluşturmaktadır. Bilginler küreselleşmenin köklerini modern zamanlara yerleştirirken, bazıları Avrupa çağında keşfedilen ve Yeni Dünya'ya seferler yapmadan çok önce geçmişini izlerler. Hatta bazısı kökeni M.Ö. 3. binyılda da izlemektedir. 19. yüzyılın sonu ve 20. yüzyılın başında, dünya ekonomilerinin ve kültürlerinin bağlılığı çok hızlı bir şekilde büyüdü. Küreselleşme terimi, 1980'lerin ortalarından beri ve özellikle 1990'ların ortalarından beri giderek daha fazla kullanılmaktadır. 2000 yılında Uluslararası Para Fonu, ticaret ve işlemler, sermaye ve yatırım hareketleri, insanların göçü ve dolaşımı ve bilginin yaygınlaştırılması olmak üzere küreselleşmenin dört temel yönünü belirledi.
