Böbrekte nefron adı verilen tübüler yapı kan dolaştırarak idrar oluşturur. Nefronun başında, glomerulus / ɡlɒmɛrələs /, kan filtrelemesinin ilk adımını yapan kılcal damar ağdır. Glomerulus Bowman kapsülü ile çevrilidir. Kan plazması glomerülün kılcal damarları vasıtasıyla Bowman kapsülüne süzülür. Bowman'ın kapsülü süzüntüyü nefronun bir parçası olan bir tüp içine boşaltır. Bir glomerulus kan dolaşımını renal dolaşımdaki bir ateriyel arteriyörden alır. Diğer birçok kılcal yatağın aksine, glomerulus bir venül yerine efferent arteriyole sızar. Bu arteriollerin direnci, glomerül içerisinde yüksek basınca neden olur ve ultrafiltrasyon işlemine yardımcı olur; burada sıvı ve çözünür materyal, kılcal damarlardan ve Bowman kapsülüne zorlanır. Bir glomerulus ve onun etrafındaki Bowman kapsülü, böbreklerin temel filtrasyon ünitesi olan böbrek bir korpusu oluşturur. Kanların tüm glomerüllerde filtrelenme oranı ve böylelikle böbrek fonksiyonlarının toplamı, glomerüler filtrasyon hızıdır.
