Grafit / ɡræfaɪt / neredeyse tamamen karbon atomlarından yapılır ve elmas gibi yarı metal temel element minerali ve karbon bir allotropudur. "Yazı taşı" anlamına gelen grafit, 1789'da Eski Yunan γράφω'dan İbrahim Gottlob Werner tarafından "kurşun" olarak bilinen kurşun kalemlerde kullanılması için "çizmek / yazmak" olarak adlandırılmıştır. Grafit, standart koşullar altında en kararlı karbon halidir. Bu nedenle, termokimyondaki karbon bileşiklerinin oluşma ısısını tanımlamak için standart hal olarak kullanılır.
