Hemofili, kan damarı kırıldığında kanamayı durdurmak için kullanılan kan pıhtılaşmasını veya pıhtılaşmasını kontrol etme yeteneğini bozan kalıtsal genetik bozukluklar grubudur. Hemofili A, bozukluğun en yaygın biçimi olup, yaklaşık 5,000-10,000 erkek doğumda yaklaşık 1'dir. Hemofili B yaklaşık 20.000-34.000 erkek doğumda yaklaşık 1'de görülür. En resesif seks bağlantılı X kromozom bozuklukları gibi, hemofili erkeklerde kadınlara göre daha yüksektir. Bunun nedeni, dişiler iki X kromozomuna sahipken erkeklerde sadece bir tane var, bu nedenle kusurlu genin onu taşıyan herhangi bir erkekte ortaya çıktığı garanti edilir.
