Hamitler, Erken Kretase'nin Apt evresinde geç dönem gelişen ve Geç Kretase döneminin Senomaniyen evresine kadar uzanan heteromorf amonyak cinsidir. Cins neredeyse kesinlikle parafyletik olmakla birlikte, daha türetilmiş gruplamalara tam olarak sığmayan Süperfamily Turrilitaceae'nin heteromorf amonyaklarının "hepsini yakalamak" olarak yaygın olarak kullanılmaya devam etmektedir. Tür içindeki sınıflandırmaları belirleme girişiminde, Eohamitler, Hamitella, Helicohamitler, Lytohamitler, Planohamitler, Psilohamitler ve Sziveshamitler gibi farklı paleontologlar tarafından yeni bir seri veya alt nesillere bölünmüştür. Tür, eski Albian'dan Hamites attenuatus'tır ve James Sowerby, 1814'te yaptığı Mineral Birleşik Krallık Conchology'de 1850'de James Parkinson tarafından Eski Dünyanın Organik Kalıntıları adlı eserinde yaratılmıştır. Bu James Parkinson, sarsıntı Felci adlı hastalığının ilk bilimsel tanımı olarak bilinir ve şu anda onun şerefine Parkinson hastalığı denir.
