Oktan veya oktan sayısı, motor veya havacılık yakıtının performansının standart bir ölçüsüdür. Oktan sayısı ne kadar yüksek olursa yakıt o kadar sıkışabilir. Geniş anlamda, daha yüksek oktan oranına sahip yakıtlar, daha yüksek sıkıştırma oranları gerektiren yüksek performanslı benzinli motorlarda kullanılır. Buna karşılık düşük oktanlı yakıtlar dizel motorlar için idealdir. Yakıtın yüksek sıkıştırılabilirliği, motorun sıkıştırılmasına orantılı olarak üretmek üzere tasarlanmıştır. Düşük oktan sayısına sahip benzin kullanımı, motorun çalınmasına neden olabilir.
