Histoloji, bitki ve hayvan hücrelerinin ve dokularının mikroskobik anatomisinin incelenmesidir. Genellikle hücre ve dokuları kesit alma ve boyama ile inceledikten sonra hafif mikroskop veya elektron mikroskopu ile inceleyerek gerçekleştirilir. Histolojik çalışmalar doku kültürü aracılığıyla yapılabilir, burada canlı hücrelerin çeşitli araştırma projeleri için vücudun dışındaki uygun bir ortamda izole edilmesi ve muhafaza edilmesi mümkündür. Mikroskopik yapıları görselleştirme veya farklı şekilde tanımlama yeteneği sıklıkla histolojik boyalarla zenginleştirilir. Histoloji, biyoloji ve tıbbın vazgeçilmez bir aracıdır. Hastalıklı dokunun mikroskobik çalışması olan histopatoloji, anatomik patolojide önemli bir araçtır, zira kanser ve diğer hastalıkların doğru teşhisi genellikle örneklerin histopatolojik incelenmesini gerektirir. Histopatolojik muayene yapan ve gözlemlerine dayanarak tanı bilgileri sağlayan personel, genellikle patolog olarak kurul onaylı eğitimli doktorlardır.
