Hookworm, ev sahibinin ince bağırsağında yaşayan, köpek, kedi veya insan gibi memeli olabilen parazit bir nematod. İki kanca kurdu türü insanlara genelde enfeksiyon buluyor: Ancylostoma duodenale ve Necator americanus. A. duodenale, Ortadoğu, Kuzey Afrika, Hindistan ve Güney Avrupa'da baskınken, N. americanus, Amerika, Sahra altı Afrika, Güneydoğu Asya, Çin ve Endonezya'da hakimdir. A.canziliense ve A. tubaeforme türleri kedilere bulaşırken, A. caninum köpekleri enfekte eder. Uncinaria stenocephala hem köpekleri hem de kedileri enfekte eder. A. caninum, 1988-1992 yılları arasında Avustralya, Brisbane'de 150 vaka bildirerek insanlara bulaştı. Kanca kurtları dev yuvarlak kurttan çok daha küçüktür ve yuvarlak solucan istilasında sıkça görülen doku göçü ve mekanik tıkanıklıkların komplikasyonları kanca avcılığında daha az görülür. Kancalı enfeksiyonun en önemli riski, bağırsakta demir kaybına bağlı anemi. Solucanlar kanımı şiddetle emer ve mukozaya zarar verirler. Bununla birlikte, dışkıda kan kaybı belirgin bir şekilde belirgindir.
