Miklós Horthy de Nagybánya, I. Dünya Savaşları ile II. Dünya Savaşları arasındaki yıllar boyunca ve 1 Mart 1920'den 15 Ekim 1944'e kadar hizmet eden İkinci Dünya Savaşı yılları boyunca Macaristan Krallığı'na ev sahipliği yaptı. Béla Kun yönetimindeki Macar komünistleri 1919'da Macaristan'da Macar Sovyet Cumhuriyeti'ni ilan ederek Macaristan'ın Kızıl Terrini başlattıktan sonra, Horthy'den kuvvetlerini emretmesini isteyen devrimci bir hükümet kuruldu. 1919'da Rumen, Çekoslovakya ve Yugoslav kuvvetleri Macaristan'ı istila etti ve daha sonra Romanya ordusu Kun hükümetini devirdi. Macaristan'ın Beyaz Terlemesine ilk başta kalmasına izin verdi, ancak sonunda anti-komünistler arasında birkaç aşırılık yanlısı hapsetti. Kasım 1919'da Romalılar Budapeşte'yi boşalttığında Horthy, Ulusal Ordu başkanına girdi.
