Histerezis, bir sistemin çıktısının sadece mevcut girişine değil, aynı zamanda geçmiş girdilerinin geçmişine bağımlılığıdır. Bağımlılık, tarihin bir iç devletin değerini etkilediğinden ortaya çıkar. Gelecekteki çıktılarını tahmin etmek için, iç durumu ya da geçmişi bilinmelidir. Belli bir girdi sırayla artar veya azalırsa, tipik bir histerez işareti çıktı olarak şekildeki gibi bir döngü oluşturmasıdır.
