Ekonomide esneklik, bir ekonomik değişkenin bir başkasının değişimine karşı ne kadar duyarlı olduğunu ölçer. Örneğin: ▪ "Ürünün fiyatını düşürürsem, ne kadarını satarım?" ▪ "Bir malın fiyatını yükseltirsem, bu diğer malın satışlarını nasıl etkiler?" ▪ "Bir kaynak kıtlaştığını öğrenecek olursak, insanlar bunu elde etmek için harekete geçer mi?" Elastik bir değişken, diğer değişkenlerin değişimlerine orantılı olarak daha fazla tepki veren değişkentir. Buna karşılık, elastik olmayan değişken, diğer değişkenlerin değişimine tepki olarak orantısal olarak daha düşük değişen bir değişkentir. Esneklik, bir değişkende yüzdesel değişimin, ikinci değişkenin nedensel etkisinin bir başka değişkende yüzdesel değişime oranı olarak nicelendirilebilir. Diferansiyel hesaplamalar açısından daha kesin bir tanım verilmiştir. Bir değişkenin başka bir nedensel değişkendeki değişikliklere karşı tepkiselliğini ölçmek için bir araçtır.
