Aktarılan veya figüratif bir anlamda, bir pelerin veya kılık değiştirme anlamına gelebilir. İngilizce'de "integument" oldukça modern bir kelimedir, kökeni onyedinci yüzyılın başlarına kadar uzanmaktadır. Bu, bir cilt ya da kabuk ile örtülmüş, giydirilmiş ya da "kaplamalı" ya da "kaplanmış" anlamda örtülü bir malzeme ya da katman anlamına gelebilir.
