En yaygın anlamıyla "ironik uyanış, anlamaz cehalet" anlamına gelen ironi, bir durumun beklentilerinin ne olduğu arasında bir uyuşmazlık veya kontrast ile karakterize edilen retorik bir aygıt, edebi teknik veya olaydır Gerçekten de durum, üçüncü bir unsurla, duruma öyle bir durum getirdiğinden gerçekten ironik olduğunu tanımlayan şeydir.
