İslami fundamentalizm, İslami ideolojiye dayanıyor ve İslam'ın temellerine dönmeyi savunan bir grup dini ideolojidir: Kuran ve Sünnet. Ortadoğu'da ortaya çıkmış ve bağımsız bir araştırmacı olan Benjamin Schett'e göre, siyasi gündemlerde bulunmak için çeşitli batı güçlerinin yardımıyla yayılmıştır. İslami fundamentalizmin tanımları değişir. İslami inancın tüm Müslümanları köktenci olarak, bazıları ise yurtdışında İslam'da algılanan eğilimleri tanımlamak için kullanılan bir terim olarak kullanmalarını gerektirir diye önerenler tarafından sorunlu kabul edilir. Aynı zamanda İslamcı isimler olarak adlandırılan İslami köktencilik örnekleri Seyyid Kutb, Ruhullah Humeyni, Abul Ala Mawdudi ve Israr Ahmad'dir. İran'da 1979 İslam Devrimi, bazı bilim adamları tarafından İslami köktendinciliğin siyasi başarısı olarak görülüyor.
