Protein izoformu
Bir protein izoformu, aynı proteinin birkaç farklı formdan herhangi biridir. Bir proteinin farklı biçimleri çok yakından ilişkili gen çiftlerinden üretilebilir - "aynı protein" ya da "bir protein", milyarlarca yıl önce çoğaltılan ve sonradan büyük ölçüde ayrılmış olan tek bir atasal genten ortaya çıkan, yüksek oranda farklılaşmış paraloglar için mantıklı gelmediği için dizisi, yapısı ve işlevselliği -veya alternatif genleşme yoluyla aynı genden kaynaklanabilir. Daha eski literatürde, aynı genin allellerini tanımlamak için isoform terimi kullanılmasına da rastlanabilir ancak şu an terimler çoğunlukla paralog ve alternatif olarak splizlenmiş proteinlerdir, aleller değildir. İzoformların bulunması, insan genom projesi tarafından ortaya konan az sayıdaki protein kodlama bölgesi genini açıklayabilir: aynı gen tarafından kodlanan farklı proteinler proteomun çeşitliliğini artırabilir. DNA seviyesindeki izoformlar cDNA transkript çalışmalarıyla kolayca karakterize edilir.
