İzotop
İzotoplar belirli bir kimyasal elementin varyantlarıdır; öyle ki belirli bir elementin tüm izotopları her atomda aynı sayıda protona sahipken, nötron sayısı farklıdır. İzotop terimi, "aynı yerde" anlamına gelen Yunan kökleri isos ve topos'undan oluşur. Böylece, tek bir elemanın farklı izotopları periyodik tabloda aynı pozisyonu alır. Atomun çekirdeği içindeki protonların sayısına atom numarası denir ve nötr atomdaki elektronların sayısına eşittir. Her atom numarası belirli bir elementi tanımlar, ancak izotopu tanımlamaz; belirli bir elementin atomu, nötron sayısının geniş bir aralığına sahip olabilir. Çekirdekteki çekirdeğin sayısı, atomun kütle numarasıdır ve belirli bir öğenin her izotopunun farklı bir kütle numarası vardır. Örneğin karbon-12, karbon-13 ve karbon-14 sırasıyla 12, 13 ve 14 kütle numaralı element karbonunun üç izotopudur.
