Karyotip
Bir karyotip, bir ökaryotik hücrenin çekirdeğinde kromozomların sayısı ve görünüşüdür. Bu terim aynı zamanda bir türün veya tek bir organizmadaki kromozomların tamamı için de kullanılır. Karyotipler, kromozom sayısını ve ışık mikroskopu altında neye benzediğini açıklar. Dikkatinin uzunluğuna, centromerlerin pozisyonuna, bantlama modeline, cinsiyet kromozomları arasındaki herhangi bir farklılığa ve diğer fiziksel özelliklere dikkat edilir. Karyotiplerin hazırlanması ve çalışılması, sitogenetik bir parçasıdır. Giemsa boyaması ile insan erkeğinin karyogramu Kromozomların tüm kümeleri üzerinde yapılan çalışmalar bazen karyoloji olarak bilinir. Kromozomlar, karyogram veya diyagram olarak bilinen standart bir biçimde gösterilir: çiftler halinde, aynı ebattaki kromozomlar için, ebat ve santrometrenin pozisyonuna göre sıralanır. Bir bireyin veya bir türün somatik hücrelerindeki temel kromozom sayılarına somatik sayı denir ve 2n olarak adlandırılır. Böylece insanlarda 2n = 46. Mikrop soyunda kromozom sayısı n.p28 şeklindedir. Normal diploid organizmalarda iki kopyada otozomal kromozomlar bulunur.
