Catha edulis, Afrika Boynuzu ve Arap Yarımadası'na özgü çiçekli bir bitkidir. Bu alanlardan gelen topluluklar arasında, çatladığı çikolatanın binlerce yıl öncesine ait bir sosyal gelenek olduğu bir geçmişi var. Khat, heyecanı, iştahsızlık ve öfori yarattığı söylenen bir amfetamin benzeri uyarıcı olan cathinone adı verilen bir monoamin alkaloid içerir. 1980'de Dünya Sağlık Örgütü, WHO'nun khat'ı ciddi bağımlılık yapmayı düşünmese de onu hafif-orta şiddette psikolojik bağımlılık üretebilecek bir istismar uyuşturucu olarak sınıflandırdı. Bitki DEA gibi anti-ilaç kuruluşları tarafından hedef alındı. Cibuti, Etiyopya, Somali ve Yemen de dahil olmak üzere diğer ülkelerde üretimi, satışı ve tüketimi yasal olduğu halde Kanada, Almanya, Birleşik Krallık ve Amerika Birleşik Devletleri gibi bazı ülkelerde kontrol edilen bir maddedir.
