Hidrometre, sıvıların özgül ağırlığını ölçmek için kullanılan bir araçtır; yani sıvının yoğunluğuna suyun yoğunluğuna oranı. Bir hidrometre genellikle camdan yapılır ve silindirik bir gövdeden ve dik olarak yüzmesini sağlamak için cıva veya kurşun ile vurulmuş bir ampulden oluşur. Test edilecek sıvı uzun bir kaba, çoğunlukla kademeli silindirlere dökülür ve hidrometre serbestçe yüzene kadar nazikçe sıvıya indirilir. Sıvının yüzeyinin hidrometrenin sapıyla temas ettiği nokta not edilir. Hidrometreler genellikle gövde içinde bir ölçek içerir, böylece özgül ağırlık yerinden doğrudan okunabilir.
