Lazio
Latium, Roma'nın kurulduğu ve Roma İmparatorluğu'nun başkenti haline geldiği orta batı İtalya'nın bölgesidir. Latium başlangıçta Latinler kabinesinde bulunan verimli bir volkanik topraktan oluşan küçük bir üçgen idi. Tiber nehrinin sol kıyısında, Anio nehri yönünde kuzeye, güneybatıda ise Pomptina Palus'a kadar uzanarak Circeus burunlarına kadar uzanır. Tiber'in sağ kıyısı Etrüsk şehirindeki Veii tarafından işgal edildi ve diğer sınırlar İtilal kabileler tarafından işgal edildi. Ardından Roma, Latium'u kuzeydoğudaki Apenin Dağları'na ve güneydoğudaki bataklığın karşı ucuna yayarak Veii'yi ve ardından italik komşularını yenmiştir. Modern torun olan Lazio'nun İtalyan Bölgesi, Latince'de Latium ve bazen modern İngilizce olarak da bilinir, orijinal Latium'u iki katına çıkarmaz ama hala biraz daha büyüktür. Latium'u işgal eden kabileler olan Latinlerin eski dili, Latince ve Romence dillerinin atası olan Eski Latince dilinin hemen öncülü olmaktı.
