Kurşun Değiştirme Petrol, kurşunlu benzine alternatif sağlamak için geliştirilmiş bir yakıttır. Önde gelen dört yıldızlı benzin, İngiltere'de 2000 yılında satıldı, son otomobil kullanıldıktan sekiz yıl sonra ve diğer metal tuzlarını içeren LRP piyasaya sürüldü ve hala çok sayıda otomobilin yakıt kullanmaya devam edebileceğini sağladı. Kurşun benzin, tetraetil kurşun veya TEL olarak bilinen bir madde içeriyordu; bu sıvı, aslen oktan oranını artırmak için benzine eklenen kurşun bileşiğiydi. TEL eklemenin bir yan etkisi, motorun supap yüzeylerinde kurşun bileşikleri tabakasının oluşması, aşınmayı geciktirmesidir. Kurşun çok toksiktir ve egzoz gazlarındaki kurşun bileşikleri atmosfere kaçar ve kirliliğe neden olur. İnsan sağlığına etkileri çokça belgelenmiştir. Bu, kurşunsuz benzinin kullanımına neden oldu. Normal kurşunsuz benzinle, motorun ateşleme zamanlamasında bir ayarlama, düşük oktan değerinin neden olduğu patlama öncesi problemleri çözdü, ancak hızlandırılmış kapak aşınmasını önlemek için hiçbir şey yapmadı. Petroldeki kurşun kullanımı, vana yuvalarının doğrudan dökme demir veya alüminyum silindir kafalarına işlenmesine izin vermişti.
