Limnetik bölge
Limnetik bölge, bir gölde kıyıdan uzakta iyi aydınlatılmış açık yüzey sularıdır. Bölgedeki bitki örtüsü, bu açık su genişliğini çevrelemektedir ve profundal bölgenin üstündedir. Gölün ana fotosentez gövdesi budur. Bu bölge, gölün tüketicilerini destekleyen oksijen ve yiyecek üretir. Göl tabanının çok derin ve köklü su bitkilerini desteklemeye elverişsiz olduğu alanda ışıklandırılmış yüzey suları olarak tanımlanabilir. Bu alan yosun ve siyanobakterilerin yanı sıra zooplankton, küçük kabuklular ve balıklardan oluşan çeşitli fitoplanktonlar tarafından işgal edilmektedir. Çoğu fotosentez gölde gerçekleşir.
