Listserv terimi, bir kaç eski elektronik posta listesi yazılım uygulamalarına atıfta bulunmak için göndericinin listeye bir e-posta göndermesine ve daha sonra şablon olarak listeye abone adreslerine gönderilmesine izin vermek için kullanılmıştır. Orijinal Listserv yazılımı olan Bitnic Listserv, IBM VM ana bilgisayarlarında uygulanması için izin verilen posta listelerine izin verildi ve 1984 yılında Ira Fuchs, Daniel Oberst ve Ricky Hernandez tarafından geliştirildi. Bu posta listesi servisi Listserv @ Bitnic olarak biliniyordu ve çabucak bir anahtar haline geldi BITNET şebekesinde servis. Bir UNIX Sendmail takma adına benzer bir işlevsellik sağladı ve Sendmail'de olduğu gibi abonelikler manuel olarak yönetildi. 1986'da Éric Thomas, ilk otomatik posta listesi yönetimi uygulaması olan "Revised Listserv" olarak adlandırılan bağımsız bir uygulama geliştirdi. Revize Listserv'den önce, e-posta listeleri manuel olarak yönetildi.
