Manyetometreler iki genel amaçlı kullanılır: ferromagnet gibi manyetik bir malzemenin mıknatıslanmasını ölçmek veya bazı durumlarda, uzayda bir noktadaki manyetik alanın yönünü ve kuvvetini ölçmek. İlk magnetometre Carl Friedrich Gauss tarafından 1833 yılında icat edildi ve 19. yüzyıldaki önemli gelişmeler halen yaygın olarak kullanılan Hall Etkisini içeriyordu.
