Tiyol
Organik kimyada, bir tiyol, bir karbon bağlı sülfhidril grubunu içeren bir organosülfür bileşiğidir. Tiyoller, alkollerin kükürt analoğudur ve sözcük, "thion" + "alkol" ün portmanteau'dur ve ilk kelime Yunanca θεῖον = "kükürt" ten gelmektedir. -SH fonksiyonel grubun kendisine bir tiyol grubu veya bir sülfhidril grubu denir. Çoğu tiyol sarımsak kokularını andırır. Tiyoller, doğal gazın tespit edilmesine yardımcı olmak için koku kaynağı olarak kullanılırlar ve "doğal gaz kokusu", koku kaynağı olarak kullanılan tiyolün kokusundan kaynaklanır. Tiyollere sıklıkla merkaptanlar denir. Merkaptan / mərkæptæn / terimi, tiolat grubu cıva bileşikleriyle o derece güçlü bir şekilde bağlandığı için Latin mercuryum captanlarından türetilmiştir. Tiyoller cıva ile reaksiyona girerek merkaptitler oluştururlar.
