Melina Mercouri
Maria Amalia Mercouri olarak dünyaya gelen Melina Mercouri, Yunanlı bir oyuncu, şarkıcı ve politikacıydı. Bir aktris olarak Stella'da film başlangıcını kazandı ve Never On Sunday, Phaedra, Topkapi ve Dawn'daki Promise'deki performanslarıyla uluslararası başarıya imza attı. 1960 Cannes Film Festivali'nde En İyi Kadın Oyuncu dalında ödül aldı ve aynı zamanda bir Akademi Ödülü, Tony Ödülü, üç Altın Küre Ödülü ve iki BAFTA Ödülü'ne aday gösterildi. 1967-1974 Yunan askeri cuntasında siyasi bir aktivist olarak 1977'de Helen Parlamentosu'na, 1981'de Yunanistan'ın ilk kadın Kültür Bakanı oldu. Mercouri, 1983 yılında, Avrupa Birliği tarafından 1985 yılından bu yana kurulan Avrupa Kültür Başkenti. Parthenon'dan çıkarılan ve şimdi British Museum'da sergilenmekte olan Parthenon Mermerler'in Atina'ya geri döndürülmesi için güçlü bir savunucuydu.
