Mesoglea
Mesohal olarak da bilinen Mesoglea, coelenteratların ve süngerlerin bünyesindeki iki epitel hücresi tabakası arasında bulunan yarı saydam, canlı olmayan, jöle benzeri bir maddedir. Mesoglea çoğunlukla sudur. Mesoglea sudan başka, kolajen ve heparan sülfat proteoglikanlar gibi lifli proteinleri içeren çeşitli maddelerden oluşur. Mesoglea çoğunlukla asellülerdir, ancak hem cnidaria hem de ctenophora'da mesagona kas demetleri ve sinir lifleri içerir. Diğer sinir ve kas hücreleri epitel tabakalarının hemen altında bulunur. Mesoglea ayrıca, fagositozan çöpler ve bakterilerde rol oynayan dolambaçlı amipositler de içerir. Bu hücreler aynı zamanda antibakteriyel kimyasallar üreterek enfeksiyonlarla mücadele eder. Mesoglea, hidra gibi küçük koelenterat hücrelerdeki katmanlardan daha ince olabilir veya büyük denizanalısındaki vücudun hacmini oluşturabilir. Mesoglea vücudu destekleyen bir iç iskelet görevi görür. Esnek özellikleri, kasların büzülmesiyle deforme olduktan sonra şekli restore etmeye yardımcı olur.
