Mezopotamya (Eski Yunan'dan: Μεσοποταμία "nehirler arasında"; Arapça: بلاد الرافدين (bilād al-rāfidayn); Süryani: ܒܝܬ ܢܗܪܝܢ (Beth Nahrain) "nehirler bölgesi"), Dicle-Fırat bölgesi için bir isim. nehir sistemi, modern gün Irak, Kuveyt, Suriye'nin kuzeydoğu kesimi ve daha güneydoğu Türkiye'ye ve güneybatı İran'ın daha küçük bölümlerine karşılık gelmektedir. Bronz Çağı Mezopotamya, batıda medeniyetin beşiği olarak yaygın olarak kabul edildi ve bugünkü modern Irak topraklarında yer alan Sümer ve Akad, Babil ve Asur imparatorlukları dahil edildi. Demir Çağı'nda Neo-Asur ve Neo-Babil imparatorlukları tarafından kontrol edildi. Yerli Sümerler ve Akkadlar (Asuriler ve Babiller dahil) Mezopotamya'ya, yazılı tarihi (M.Ö. 3100) başından Achaemenid İmparatorluğu tarafından fethedildiğinde M.Ö. 539'da Babylon'un düşüşüne kadar baskın olmuşlardır. M.Ö. 332 yılında Büyük İskele'ye düştü ve ölümünden sonra Yunan Selevkos İmparatorluğunun bir parçası oldu. M.Ö. 150 civarında Mezopotamya Partilerin kontrolü altındaydı.
