Metaplastikite aslında W.C tarafından hazırlanan bir terimdir. İbrahim ve M.F. Sinaptik plastisitenin esnekliğine atfen bakalım. O zamana kadar sinaptik esneklik, bireysel sinapsların plastik doğasına atıf yapmıştı. Ancak bu yeni biçim, plastisitenin kendisinin plastisitesine, dolayısıyla meta-plastisite terimine atıfta bulundu. Fikir, sinapsın daha önceki etkinlik geçmişinin mevcut esnekliğini belirlemesi. Bu, hafızada ve öğrenmede önemli olduğu düşünülen altta yatan mekanizmaların bazılarında uzun vadeli potensiyasyon, Uzun Süreli Depresyon ve benzeri gibi rol oynayabilir.
