Metre veya sayaç, Uluslararası Birimlerin Sisteminin temel birimidir. Başlangıçta Dünya Ekvatorundan Kuzey Kutbuna olan uzaklığın on milyonuncu birincisi olması amaçlanan bu tanım, artmakta olan metroloji bilgisini yansıtacak şekilde periyodik olarak rafine edildi. 1983'ten bu yana, "saniyenin 1 / 299,792,458'lik bir zaman aralığında ışığın yola çıktığı yolun uzunluğu" olarak tanımlandı.
