Genel olarak MI5 olarak bilinen Güvenlik Servisi, Birleşik Krallık'ın yerli karşı istihbarat ve güvenlik ajansıdır ve yabancı tehditlere, Hükümet İletişimi Karargahına ve Savunma İstihbaratına odaklanan Gizli İstihbarat Servisi'nin yanı sıra istihbarat makinesinin bir parçasıdır. Hepsi Ortak İstihbarat Komitesi'nin yönetimi altındadır. Hizmet, 1989 Güvenlik Servisi Yasası ve 1994 İstihbarat Hizmet Yasası'nda kanuni bir dayanağa sahiptir. Söz konusu görev, İngiliz parlamenter demokrasisinin ve ekonomik çıkarların, terörle mücadelenin ve İngiltere'deki karşı casusluğun korunmasını içermektedir. Her ne kadar esas olarak iç güvenlikle ilgiliyse de, misyonunu desteklemek için denizaşırı bir role sahiptir. Sivil hizmet topluluğunda hizmet, yaygın olarak Box 500 olarak biliniyor. Hizmet, 1995'den beri Londra'daki Millbank'ta Thames House'da ulusal bir merkezi konumda bulunuyor ve personel sayısını tek bir merkez teşkilatına çekiyor. Thames Evi Mart 2013'e kadar Kuzey İrlanda Ofisi ile paylaşıldı ve Güvenlik Hizmetine bağlı bir alt örgüt olan Müşterek Terörizm Analiz Merkezi'ne ev sahipliği yapıyor.
