Mikroorganizma, tek hücreli veya çok hücreli bir organizma olabilen mikroskobik bir organizmadır. Mikroorganizmaların incelenmesine Mikrobiyoloji adı verilir. Bu konu, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek'in 1675'te mikroorganizmaların keşfi ile başlayan ve kendi tasarımının bir mikroskopu kullanılarak elde edilen bir konudur. Mikroorganizmalar çok çeşitlidir ve bakterileri, arkeaları ve neredeyse tüm protozoonları içerir. Bunlara ayrıca mantarların, alglerin ve rotiferler gibi bazı hayvanların bazıları dahildir. Birçok makro hayvan ve bitki, aynı zamanda mikroorganizma olan yavru aşamalara sahiptir.
