Bir mikrolit, genellikle çakmak veya çörtden yapılmış ve tipik olarak bir santimetre kadar ölü veya yarım santimetre genişliğinde küçük bir taş alettir. Küçük bir bıçaktan veya daha geniş bir bıçak benzeri çakmaktaşından, ani veya kesik rötuşla üretilir ve çok küçük bir atık bırakır ve buna mikroburin denir. Mikrolitlerin kendileri, atölye atıklarından veya kazalardan ayırt edilebilecek kadar yeterince çalışırlar. İki mikrolit ailesi genellikle tanımlanır: laminer ve geometrik. Arkeolojik bir yerleşim yeri için mikrolitlerin birleşimi kullanılabilir.
