Modem
Modem, dijital bilgi kodlamak için bir analog taşıyıcı sinyali modüle eden ve iletilen bilginin şifresini çözmek için sinyali demodüle eden bir cihazdır. Hedef, kolayca aktarılabilen ve orijinal dijital verilerin çoğaltılması için kod çözülen bir sinyal üretmektir. Modemler, ışık yayan diyotlardan radyoya analog sinyaller gönderen herhangi bir yolla kullanılabilir. Ortak bir modem türü, bir bilgisayarın dijital verilerini, telefon hatları üzerinden iletilmek üzere modüle edilmiş elektrik sinyaline dönüştüren ve dijital verileri kurtarmak için alıcı taraftaki başka bir modem tarafından demodüle edilen bir modeldir. Modemler genel olarak belirli bir zaman birimi içerisinde gönderebilecekleri veri miktarına göre sınıflandırılır ve genellikle saniyede bit / saniye veya saniyede bayt cinsinden ifade edilir. Modemler, baud cinsinden ölçülen sembol hızlarına göre de sınıflandırılabilir. Baud birimi saniyedeki sembolleri veya modemin yeni bir sinyal gönderdiği saniye başına kaç kez gösterdiğini gösterir. Örneğin, ITU V.21 standardı 300 baud kullanarak saniyede 300 bit taşımak için iki farklı sembole karşılık gelen iki olası frekanslı ses frekansı kaydırma anahtarlamayı kullandı.
